April 8, 2009 – 2:50 pm

I’ve had a few people ask me about the 2009 Cascade Brewers Cup results and now that Jim has posted the spreadsheet I’ll post them here as well. Sorry about the formatting, I copy & pasted it right from the spreadsheet and did a little bit of touch up myself to make it look better

Congratulations to all winners!

2008 Washington Homebrewer of the Year

April 6, 2009 – 7:02 am

It was announced on saturday 4/4/09 at Exbeerience beer festival.  I’d known the results for a while now but had to wait for the official announcement.

I’m 2008’s Washington Homebrewer of the Year.  Congratulations to everyone else in the running and the other awards that were announced that day. I didn’t take any pictures at the event, but I know others did so if I can find some of them I’ll get them posted here at some point.

Here is the official WAHA article about it

List of non-pasteurized sour beers

March 17, 2009 – 9:04 am

I’ve been hoping to assemble a list of sour/funky beers that haven’t been filtered or pasteurized for a while. Now I’ve started putting this together and its definitely not complete but its a step in the right direction. I’m sure there are errors and omissions. So if someone has a correction/addition please let me know and I will fix it up.

I can’t get many of these beers at home, so if you have one you want me to check the dregs for bugs, I’ll gladly send along my address so you can send one to me :)

Non Filtered/Pasteurized Sour Beers

  • Cantillon - Spontaneous fermentation.  So probably anything you can think of
  • New Belgium La Folie - Saccharomyces, Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus, Pediococcus
  • Orval - S. cerevisiae, Brettanoymces
  • Russian River Beatification - “Saccharomyces, Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus, Pediococcus & other wild yeast & bacteria”
  • Russian River Consecration - Saccharomyces, Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus, Pediococcus
  • Russian River Temptation - Saccharomyces, Brettanomyces
  • Russian River Sanctification - 100% Brettanomyces
  • Russian River Supplication - “three strains of Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus, Pediococcus”

Filtered/Pasteurized Sour Beers

  • Deschutes The Dissident
  • Duchess de Bourgogne

Yeast storage in distilled water

March 2, 2009 – 10:43 am

I’ve been culturing yeast on plates/slants for a while now and thought it would be fun to try the distilled water storage method.  There are a bunch of resources online that I found info from so I don’t need to rehash it here.

http://www.mousetrap.net/mouse/brewing/dwyeast.html
http://brewery.org/brewery/library/SterileDW1096.html

Right now I just have some Bells Two Hearted yeast and some WLP410 in this form, but I’ll eventually get more and more of my yeast in this form so I don’t have to keep culturing on slants. I made a few extra tubes of the Bells yeast that I’ll use to check viability over time. In a few weeks I’ll try to plate out some just to see.

I’ll probably keep strains that are tough to get on slants for a while until I’m sure that this is working out for me, but other strains that I can get easily I’ll probably stop putting on slants.
Update: I was too excited to leave it alone so a few days ago I dipped my loop into one of the tubes and streaked it out on a plate.  Two days later I was happy to see growth.  Sounds like this is going to be a handy technique.

Novembeerfest Results

November 4, 2008 – 1:57 pm

The Novembeerfest judging was held Saturday 11/1/08.  I was hoping to head over to judge but I just couldn’t make it.

I sent over 9 beers to be judged.  Amazingly all of them but 1 (2 entries, I entered my fresh hop IPA twice) placed.  My Helles took BOS and also took 3rd in BOS entered as a Blonde ale.  Can’t wait to see the scoresheets on the blonde to see how the judges thought it matched the style.

I really need to rebrew the Helles to see if I’m able to reproduce such an awesome beer.  In total it’s won 3 BOS and 2 3rd place in BOS round.

The complete results are here

This should qualify me for 3 entries into MCAB . If I’m reading the rules correctly I’ll be able to enter something in Light Lager, Light Hybrid, and Smoke and Wood Aged.

Thanks to Tim Hayner and The Impaling Alers for organizing the event, and also to all the judges.
