GABF and KROC WBF Results

October 13, 2008 – 10:06 am

The beer Diamond Knot brewed with my recipe for the GABF Pro-AM competition didn’t win, but I did talk to quite a few people that claimed to really like it at the festival.

Congrats to the GABF Pro-Am winners!

I did get 2 silver medals from the Keg Ran Out Club’s World Brewers Forum

Evergreen State Fair BOS Results

August 23, 2008 – 7:56 pm

The full results for the Evergreen State Fair haven’t been announced yet (as far as I know), but the organizer was gracious enough to let the best of show winners know those results.

I’m happy to announce that my Munich Helles took BOS. Jim Brischke’s California Common took 1st runner up and Mark Emiley’s Belgian Blond took 2nd runner up

There were 122 entries in the beer competition this year, which I hear is almost double what there was last year.

Congratulations to all the winners and as always thanks to the organizers and judges. If the full results don’t get posted somewhere online and I’m able to get them I’ll post them up here.

Update: The full winners list is posted at the WAHA ESF page

Wyeast WY2450 Dennys Fav50

August 13, 2008 – 1:38 pm

Everyone needs to go to the Wyeast contact form and fill it out requesting that they bring back WY2450 Denny’s Fav50 yeast. It was released as a VSS this year and it should be pretty much gone now. It’s a great yeast for anyone that hasn’t tried it yet.

My reply from Wyeast was:

You can count on this strain making a return appearance. If we get
enough of a call for it, it may even be available year round, so spread
the word!

So everyone needs to contact them to request its return. I’d love to see it available year round.

Powerhouse Pro-Am

July 30, 2008 – 4:14 pm

Since I was out in the Seattle area brewing with Diamond Knot already, I was able to participate in an event put together by WAHA, Powerhouse Restaurant & Brewery, and Click Distributing.

This was a Pale ale challenge where 5 homebrewed pale ales and 5 commercial examples were judged by everyone present.

The commercial examples were:

  • Oskar Blues’ Dale’s Pale Ale
  • Elysian’s Loser Pale Ale
  • Powerhouse’s Pale Ale
  • Bear Republic’s XP Pale Ale
  • Hale’s Pale Ale

The homebrewers were:

  • James Golovich (me)
  • Darron Sullivan
  • Jim Brischke
  • Carey Peltz
  • Jim Trimble

I’m excited to say that my entry was picked as the winner, a close tie for 2nd place was Jim Brischke and Carey Peltz, and fourth was a pale ale from Elysian, Loser Pale.

I was able to take home a very nice etched growler as the award, but the best reward was meeting and talking with Tim Patty the brewer from Powerhouse, Jake the manager of Powerhouse, Mick from Click Distributing, and all the other homebrewers that were present.

Brewing at Diamond Knot

July 30, 2008 – 3:58 pm
The "little" fermenter. Only 15bbl

I finally made it out to Diamond Knot to brew my Munich Helles recipe that won at the Puget Sound Pro-Am. I tried to help as much as possible but Pat Ringe of Diamond Knot did most of the real work, it is his system after all.

I’ve uploaded some photos I took to this Photo Gallery

We brewed up 15bbl of this batch. Before that day the biggest one of my recipes was 12 gal, so this was quite a step up for me.

As of Monday it was chugging along nicely, so hopefully everything works out good and we bring home the gold at the Pro-Am comp at GABF this year.

I’ll post an update when the release date is known.

Props to Pat and the rest of the Diamond Knot crew on such a sweet setup.
