Washington Brewers Festival

June 14, 2008 – 8:13 pm

We came out to the Washington Brewers Festival today (Saturday 6/14/2008) to hear the results of the Puget Sound Pro-Am Competition and to sample some excellent beer. When Mark gets a chance he is going to update the page to add the Brewers selections as well as put up the uncoded competition results.

I had to wait to announce the comp results until the breweries made their selections but I’m happy to announce that my Munich Helles received first in category and Best of Show. My American Barleywine received first in category and honorable mention in BOS round. My Smoked Porter received third in category.

For the Pro-Am part my Munich Helles will be brewed by Diamond Knot and entered into the 2008 GABF Pro-Am. Also my American Barleywine will be brewed by Elliot Bay Brewery and entered into the 2009 GABF Pro-Am. I’m very excited to go out and work with the brewers.

With so many beers available I wasn’t able to sample everything I wanted to but there were some excellent beers that I tried. The Diamond Knot cask smoked porter was excellent as well as their Industrial IPA. I was also very impressed with the Deschutes Hop Henge Imperial IPA.

Dogfish Head amazed me by always having one of the longest lines every time I walked by. They were serving up Aprihop through their Randall with hops and fresh apricots in it. It was excellent and so was their Festina Peche.

I wish I had more time to hang out and talk with the great people I met, but alas my 3 month old daughter was getting tired as were the rest of us.

Cascade Brewers Cup Results

June 10, 2008 – 7:34 am

I had 3 winners in the CBC Cup. My ‘Special Wheat’ took gold, ‘Pliny the Elder’ clone took silver, and my ESB took bronze.

AFAIK the results are only posted on the CBC’s Yahoo group, so I’m going to paste them in here. The formatting might suck since I’m just copy and pasting from an excel spreadsheet.

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to Jim and the Cascade Brewers Guild for putting this together!

Yakima Brewing building looking for tenants

May 14, 2008 – 6:08 am

Anyone want to start up a brewery?

http://www.yakimaherald.com/stories/3993

A once-legendary brewing facility has a new owner.

Del Matthews has purchased the former Yakima Brewing & Malting Co. facility at 1803 Presson Place for $879,913 from International Wine & Spirits Ltd., a holding company of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates.

The brewery was home to Scottish native Bert Grant’s well-
regarded microbrews that included his nationally acclaimed Grant’s Scottish Ale.

Matthews, who owns several properties throughout Yakima, is open to leasing the 33,000-square-foot facility to a variety of potential tenants, but said the facility is still prime for beer making — with millions of dollars of brewing equipment inside.

Austin Homebrew Supply Annual Sale

May 10, 2008 – 6:36 pm

The AHS annual sale is next weekend. I just thought everyone would like to know so they can stock up on some supplies. I know I’m planning to order some things I can’t get locally. Pale chocolate malt, oak cubes, wyeast yeast strains, and probably some different bacteria cultures so I can try my hand at making some sour beers.

Here is the official word on it:

At Austin Homebrew Supply we are celebrating our 17th Anniversary with a big in-store party and a sale for all of our customers, both on-line and in-store. The official dates of the sale are May 17-18, 2008. Online, the sale begins at 12 AM Midnight CDT on May 17 (Saturday) and ends at 12 AM Midnight CDT May 19. That’s a 48 hour Sale. Instore that means during regular store hours Saturday May 17 (10 AM - 6 PM) and Sunday May 18 (12 PM - 5 PM).

NHC 2008 First Round Results Posted

May 8, 2008 – 4:02 pm

The NHC first round results have been posted at http://www.beertown.org/events/nhc/1st_round.html

Like I had heard, I got second place in Category 8, English Pale Ale with my ESB. I was looking at the other scores and my american wheat had the same score as the max score listed in the round, but since there were 26 entries I suspect there was a mini best of show round to determine which ones went on.

Congratulations to everyone else that is going on to the second round!

Edit: On the brewing network forum I found a link to a page that broke down the winners info, even with unofficial club points. http://mindbet.com The northwest region had the least amount of entries (in the US), I suspect thats because they were up in alaska.
