Northern Brewer IBU Giveaway

May 2, 2008 – 5:23 pm

I saw this post on the northern brewer forum and thought I would share this with everyone. The original post is here

Ive been working with NB for a while now on developing a new hop product. I’ve done plenty of experimentation with it with great results. Due to the hop shortage we thought that we would give something back to our customers so I am going to open it up to you guys. Its very simple. We will ship about 100 of you this product and all we ask are very few things…as follows:

1. Use it all in one beer (5 gal batch) for the bittering addition (~50IBU)
2. Give your feedback - Ill post a very short list of questions after its been sent that you all can post right back here on the forum so everyone can read.

Thats it, very simple!

Go here and sign up. You have until Sunday, May 11th.

Good Luck!

PS - No, I’m not telling you what it actually is yet! Wink

PPS - FYI - Entering more than once will not increase your chances of winning.

Edit: The window is now closed. I guess there were about 450 people that submitted their info, and presumably some of those were duplicates that will be removed. So there is about a 25% chance you’ll get some if you submitted.

NHC First Round

April 28, 2008 – 7:31 pm

I received my scoresheets from the Northwest region of the 2008 NHC (National Homebrew Competition). I was really looking forward to seeing the sheets since this was the first time I’ve entered the NHC. Some of my scores were good, and some were just ok.

I did hear through the hopvine, that my ESB took second place so it will be going on to the 2nd round. If I get a chance in the next few days I might brew another 5 gallons of it, and have some BJCP judges evaluate both of them to pick whichever one might do the best.

Once all of the regions entries are in the first round winners will be announced at http://www.beertown.org/events/nhc/1st_round.html

Hop Availability

April 28, 2008 – 7:22 pm

Times are tough when it comes to finding hops. My LHBS still has a good selection but prices are definitely up. I’ve been fortunate to have a small stash in my freezer. If your trying to find a specific hop, someone sent me a link to a chart that has different online retailers and what hops they have.

Thanks to the guys at brew365.com for putting this together!

WAHA Wild World of Wheats Winner Announced

March 29, 2008 – 6:51 am

I’m not sure if this is posted up on the WAHA website yet (they are still putting together the real website), but I received an email about the announcement and its posted here. My “special wheat” received 3rd place, it is the recipe labeled “Hoppy Wheat #2″ in my recipe database. The recipe wasn’t what I planned on making, but I ended up changing it right at the beginning of brewing when I dumped a bunch of hops on the floor while measuring them out.

Here is the email from Mark Emiley about it:

I am extremely happy to announce the first ever Pyramid’s Wild World
of Wheat Winner: Kevin O’Keefe from the Boeing Everett Employees
Wine and Beer Makers Club (yes, my club’s arch nemisis) for his Pale
Wheat Ale. I was lucky enough to try this beer before it was
submitted and it is an refreshingly hoppy American-Wheat ale. It
will really provide a great pre-game beer as the Mariners go out to
play.

They are actually going to brew this beer on Monday so expect a very
quick release party within the next month. We’ll find a nice non-
game night to swamp the brewery and have a great time like we did
tonight for anyone who made it down. So, look for the details on
what should be a great release party coming up soon!

I’d like to thank everyone who participated and also announce the
runner up beers. John Marioni from the Cascade Brewers Guild placed
second with his Dunkelweizen and James Golovich took third place
with his “Special Wheat.”

All in all, this has been a very fun event and a great way for the
WAHA to help get its name out there. Keep up the great entries and
encourage everyone to squeeze in their last entries to the NHC to
get Washington’s name out there, and also get ready for the next two
big competitions, the CBG Exbeerience and the Puget Sound Pro-Am.

Have a great weekend everyone,
Mark

McChord Brewfest

March 23, 2008 – 3:01 pm

I entered a few beers in the McChord AirForce Base Brewfest and my Centennial IPA won second place in the IPAs and second place in the best of show round. The IPA was all centennial hops that was supposed to be like Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale. Once I get all my recipes posted up here it will be in there.

Here are the official Competition Results
